Prince George’s County will remain in Phase Two of reopening from the coronavirus as the state of Maryland moves ahead to Phase Three.

County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said Thursday that there are still 13 ZIP codes within the county with more than a 5 percent positivity rate for the coronavirus, above the threshold for further reopening, especially given the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

One of the hardest-hit ZIP codes in the county is 20783, which starts just outside West Hyattsville and continues north to Cherry Hill, and is said have the highest confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the state

“After discussions with our health experts, and factoring in the spike we saw after the 4th of July weekend, we believe it’s prudent to stay the course right now,” she said.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, meantime, announced that the state will move ahead to the third and final phase of reopening at 5 p.m. on Friday. In that phase, movie theaters and music venues can reopen at 50 percent capacity, while retail stores and houses of worship can increase to 75 percent capacity.

Individual counties are allowed to maintain tighter restrictions, however. Apart from Prince George’s, Anne Arundel and Montgomery counties will also remain in Phase Two.

  1. Thomas Sykes says:

Once you start reading published scientific finding about this virus the action of our county is the right path to be on. Keep your mask on and take vitamin D if you are not already doing so.
