Metro is considering renaming the Prince George’s Plaza station, but first it wants to hear from area residents.
Through Monday, the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority will be running an online poll through 5 p.m. Monday, November 2, to get feedback from residents of the Route 1 corridor on the change.
The new name, which has been requested by Prince George’s County and the city of Hyattsville, would be Hyattsville Crossing. The West Hyattsville Station name would remain the same.
The move is part of a broader rebranding of Prince George’s Plaza to move away from its association with the Mall at Prince George’s. Fairfax has made a similar request to rebrand Tysons Corner to Tysons to get away from the association with the mall.
The city of Hyattsville came up with the new name — and HVX as a shorthand — during a community process in 2017 to rethink the branding of the area, which is now home to more apartments and shops than just the mall.
Under Metro policy, station names should identify nearby landmarks or geographical features, distinctive and evocative and no longer than 19 characters. Hyattsville Crossing is technically 20 characters, but it’s still one shorter than Prince George’s Plaza.
If the changes are approved, Prince George’s County would pay for new signs and maps.
