Residents of the Route 1 corridor will face new coronavirus restrictions beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, November 15, including a mandate to wear masks outside unless they are vigorously exercising.

A new order from Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks limits gatherings to 25 people outdoors and 10 indoors; limits restaurants to 50 percent capacity outdoors and 25 percent indoors; and limits gyms and bowling alleys to 25 percent capacity.

Large retail stores will continue to be limited to 50 percent capacity, but Alsobrooks said the county will step up enforcement.

The reimposed limits come as the county is seeing surges in new coronavirus cases this fall, with the number of positive tests at its highest level since July. Health officials are concerned that “lockdown fatigue” may lead people to be less careful about observing social distancing requirements.

County Health Officer Ernest L. Carter said that the most common sources for new infections are house parties and family gatherings.

Starting Monday, the University of Maryland will also hold all classes virtually for the rest of the semester due to the uptick in coronavirus cases.
