Historic Mount Rainier Building to Get Art Deco Upgrade

A historic commercial building in Mount Rainier is getting an Art Deco upgrade.

Property owner Daniel Simon is working on some exterior renovations at the three-story brick structure at 3510 Rhode Island Ave. built in 1947. The Hyattsville Wire caught up with Simon earlier today on site where he was working with a construction crew on the renovations.

Simon, who also owns the historic buildings that house Vigilante Coffee and Sangfroid Distilling in Hyattsville, bought the 7,000-square-foot building just before the coronavirus pandemic struck — something he said made things a bit more difficult.

But he decided recently to press ahead with more changes, including new storefront windows with metallic casing, lights and other touches that will restore the building to its original condition, or close to it. Simon is also planning to add a mural on the north side of the building adding to the flourishing public art scene on the Route 1 corridor.

The building currently has two tenants and Simon said the space that will have the new storefront windows will soon be available for lease.
