The latest trend in fusion cuisine has come to Mount Rainier: Dominican sushi.
Located at 3233 Rhode Island Ave., Medina Market and Kitchen offers traditional Dominican options such as empanadas, chicharrónnes, churrasco and a breakfast with mangú, salami, cheese, eggs and longaniza sausages.
But it also has chofan, a Dominican version of Chinese fried rice; and more than a dozen variations of Dominican sushi.
The restaurant is named for owner Danny Medina, who previously ran the now-closed Mi Patio Dominican restaurant up the street in Brentwood.
A hot trend in New York City in recent years at restaurants with names like El Ninja, Dominican sushi uses the Japanese dish as a jumping off point, adding ingredients like queso frito, plantains, cream cheese, chicken tempura and guacamole.
The most popular option at Medina Market is the No. 3 special made with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, bacon, avocado, sweet plantains and eel sauce.
Medina Kitchen is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays, 5 to 10 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. You can order from DoorDash or by calling (301) 803-8327.
