The Route 1 corridor’s latest mural is outside 2Fifty Texas BBQ in Riverdale Park.
The popular barbecue restaurant officially unveiled the mural by Tanglewood Works owner Sue Older-Mondeel at its location at 4700 Riverdale Rd. Wednesday.
Older-Mondeel, a resident of Riverdale Park, told the Hyattsville Wire that the design of the mural, which features hand-painted colorful flowers, was a homage to all of the places that 2Fifty owners Fernando and Debby González have lived.
The mural features Flor de Izote, the national flower of El Salvador; Black-eyed Susans from Maryland; cherry blossoms from Washington, D.C.; and blue bonnets from Texas. A black chalkboard was even designed in the middle to showcase the day’s specials.
“I intertwined the flowers the same way you might intertwine chapters in a story so I guess the mural is a depiction of their story,” she said.
The Gonzálezes originally commissioned the mural to be indoors but changed their minds when the coronavirus pandemic made outdoor dining a more popular option. Older-Mondeel painted the mural with acrylic paints on three panels in her studio, often broadcasting live on Facebook.
Murals have become a popular form of public art along the Route 1 corridor, with recent additions at Wills Decorating in Hyattsville, near Pizzeria Paradiso and outside Pennyroyal Station in Mount Rainier.
