Route 1’s Newest Mural is a Throwback to the Jazz Era

A new mural outside The Public Option brewpub at 1601 Rhode Island Ave., on the border of Woodridge and Langdon, D.C., just over the Maryland state line and the Mount Rainier city limits, is a throwback to the jazz era.

Artist Aaron DeNu said he wanted the mural, which features the vintage-looking Route 1 highway shield below the words “Cold Beer & Cats,” to look like the kind of faded old-timey roadside art you might have seen decades ago.

“I think the Route 1 shield, which was created in the 1920s, is timeless-looking,” he told the Hyattsville Wire.

The text above refers to the fact that owners Bill Perry and Cathy Huben have a cat named Sam who can be found inside the pub at 1601 Rhode Island Ave. NE when it’s open, but it’s also a play on the old slang term for someone who likes jazz.

DeNu, who works at a consulting firm during the day, is considered the pub’s “Innovator in Residence,” charged with coming up with things like projection installations and historic presentations.

The mural is visible heading north on Rhode Island Avenue on the corner of 16th Place Northeast.
