If you look closely, you can still see the outlines of the old Cameo Theatre in Mount Rainier.
Located at 3822 34th St., just off Rhode Island Avenue, the Cameo was built in 1927 by a local businessman who moved his pharmacy into a storefront on the side of the theater and rented the other side to the U.S. Postal Service.
By 1930, the theater was part of a D.C. chain owned by Sidney Lust, a former partner of the Warner Brothers — as in the actual brothers, Jack and Harry Warner — that also included the Kaywood Theatre, which still stands at 2211 Varnum St.
In 1956, the theater closed and the building was converted to a church. The Art Deco marquee was taken down, window openings bricked over and the old-fashioned ticket booth at the front entrance replaced by a standard set of doors.
Today, the building is owned by the Metropolitan Church of God, and the interior has been refurbished to look more like a church.
