A Hyattsville startup making vegan burgers recently won national notice after getting support from Mark Cuban on the show “Shark Tank.”
Everything Legendary, which was founded in 2019 with the goal of improving health in the Black community, was featured in an episode that aired Feb. 26.
Danita Claytor, Jumoke Jackson and Duane “Myko” Cheers, a DeMatha alum, impressed Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, enough to invest $300,000.
Plant-based meat has taken off recently, with brands like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat. Everything Legendary’s burgers cost a little more than their competitors, but Cheers argued on the show that their burger is the equivalent of high-end Wagyu or Kobe beef.
Everything Legendary began as a pop-up in June of 2019 at a D.C. community center and a take-out restaurant pop-up on H Street. It’s now sold frozen online and in grocery stores.
The trio started making the burgers in part to help Cheers’ mother, who has Lupus, and Claytor’s mother, who had cancer, eat healthier. On the show, Claytor said that her mother told her before she died that they would end up on “Shark Tank” one day.
About eight percent of African Americans are strict vegetarians or vegans, compared to three percent of the overall population, according to the Pew Research Center. A recent Gallup poll showed African Americans were also more likely to say they had cut meat in the past year.
Everything Legendary burgers are available at some Giant and Safeway locations.
