Here’s How You Can Support Community Journalism on the Route 1 Corridor

When we started the Hyattsville Wire in 2012, we felt the area wasn’t being well-represented in the news — real stories about life along the Route 1 corridor were just being overlooked. Our mission was to change that.

In the nearly nine years since then, we’ve regularly written about the vibrant local arts scene, new restaurants and shops, real estate and development and the interesting history of the area. We’ve featured countless stories about the people that make this community strong.

And while we were writing for those who live here, we were also writing for the greater D.C. area to help dispel some of the stereotypes about the towns and cities along Route 1 and Prince George’s County in general.

Thanks to you, our readers, we’ve been hugely successful, and our following is strong and continues to grow. Our coverage has helped inspire countless stories about the area in D.C. news outlets, and we’ve been cited by everyone from Greater Greater Washington, Eater D.C., and UrbanTurf, to DCist, the Washington Post and Politico. We were even invited to write the Washingtonian’s first official guide to the area.

We’ve been approved by Google News as an official news source, received nearly 2 million pageviews and added more than ten thousand followers and counting on social media. Even through the darkest days of the pandemic, we brought you ongoing coverage with new stories almost daily.

We’ve been a continuous cheerleader for the area, which is the main reason why we don’t want to put up a paywall. We want our stories to be read and easily shared widely across D.C.

With publications like the Prince George’s Gazette and the Prince George’s Sentinel folding in recent years and bigger outlets cutting back on local news, there’s an even greater need for a voice for the area and a news outlet that just shares lifestyle stories about the people who call Prince George’s County home. Our ambition is to meet that need.

But this past year has been hard, on everyone, including our advertisers, even while our expenses have grown on everything from upgrading the site to working to continue growing our audience.

In order to keep providing news about the corridor and expanding our coverage, we can’t rely on advertising alone. We need the community’s support as well.
