A crucial segment of the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail in downtown Hyattsville will soon be completed after years of delay.
Work on the half-mile segment from the trail’s current endpoint near Franklins, across from Arrow Bicycle, south towards the Melrose Skate Park is slated to begin this fall, according to Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA) board member Karyn Crichton.
The project is important because it will directly link the Trolley Trail to paths along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, which heads towards Montgomery County, and the Northeast Branch, which leads to D.C.
Trail users would also pass by some of the Route 1 corridor’s most popular establishments, including, appropriately enough, Streetcar 82 Brewing Co. as well as Pizzeria Paradiso, Art Works Now, Maryland Meadworks and Shortcake Bakery.
Crichton told the Hyattsville Wire getting approval for the trail involved cooperation between the city of Hyattsville, the State Highway Administration, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the CSX rail company.
“The extension of the Trolley Trail will at long last create a safe way to travel by bike in and out of Hyattsville – connecting visitors and residents, and trails and towns – in a way that supports physical and economic health in the region,” ATHA executive director Meagan Baco told told the Hyattsville Wire.
