A new preschool in College Park will open on Monday, May 24, after more than a year delay.
Founded by the nonprofit Children’s Guild Alliance, Monarch Preschool College Park is currently enrolling children ages 3 to 5 in a full-day, year-round program.
The preschool is located in an 11,400-square-foot renovated space in the College Park United Methodist Church at 9606 50th Ave. in College Park, just off Hollywood Road and Rhode Island Avenue.
Monarch offers project-based learning, in which children work for extended periods to solve real-world problems.
“A Monarch Preschool student will experience real-life, hands-on learning activities,” said preschool director Krissie Taylor, who is a University of Maryland alumni. “They will have the opportunity to explore learning throughout the school environment and take their learning home.”
Preschool can be an intense demand among parents, whose current options include College Park Nursery School and Georgetown Hill Early School in College Park, the Greenwood School in Hyattsville and the Heritage Learning Center in Chillum.
Monarch Preschool was slated to open in February 2020, but due to permitting and the pandemic the opening was delayed by more than a year.
Its advisory board includes members from the community including the university.
The Children’s Guild also runs two non-public, special-needs schools for children with emotional disabilities and autism with locations in Chillum and Baltimore.
