Latest Route 1 Mural Brings Colorful Landscape to Mount Rainier

A new mural in Mount Rainier brings a colorful landscape to the side of a brick building.

Located at 3840 34th St. near the Glut organic grocery co-op, the mural features a butterfly perched on a Penrose triangle, a skeleton key with a fake shadow and an oversized cats-eye marble.

Called “Sweet Dreams Are Made of These,” the mural is by Montgomery County artist Eric B. Ricks, a Liberian immigrant whose work can be seen around D.C. and as far as away as Oregon.

“My inspiration for the project was Hyattsville — a place that offers access to building beautiful memories,” Ricks told the Hyattsville Wire.

His other murals range from realistic portraits of people such as go-go musician Chuck Brown and poet Paul Laurence Dunbar to graffiti-inspired psychedelia, often featuring butterflies and hummingbirds.

Ricks’ work joins a new mural series by D.C. artist MISS CHELOVE inside the newly renovated Mount Rainier library.

Another mural by Ricks called “Birdsong” can be seen down the road in D.C at 1613 Rhode Island Ave. NE. His next project will be in Wheaton for the local parks commission.
