Multi-Lot Pop-Up Park Coming to Hyattsville’s Arts District

A new multi-lot pop-up park is coming at the end of June to three vacant lots near Hyattsville’s Arts District just off the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail.

The SoHy Co-op received permission earlier this month to use three city-owned lots at 4305, 4505 and 4508 Hamilton St., just south of the Yes! Organic parking lot just off the Trolley Trail, for a temporary gathering space called “The Spot.”

In a letter to the City Council, co-op co-founders Krissi Humbard and Bronwyn King wrote that they would use the space “for events, such as live music performances, food truck nights, and possibly a vendor market.”

“We’re creating a space for art, events and gathering,” King told the Hyattsville Wire. “We want The Spot to be a place for everyone. The community should feel comfortable, safe and always welcome at this site.”

Now that the co-op has permission to use the site, it’s working to secure a grant and funding from local businesses to upgrade the area, and King invited any residents who want to volunteer to reach out.

If everything goes as planned, the SoHy co-op will hold events this summer through October. The city council, which unanimously approved the proposal in May, as first reported by Route 1 Reporter, plans to eventually turn the lots, which were formerly auto garages, into public parking.
