You can now pre-order a Hyattsville library flying saucer T-shirt through the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System Foundation’s online store.
While the shirt was designed by the library system’s graphic designer Drew Clark, the idea was from Patti Kim, who is a resident of University Park and also a children’s author and a PGCMLS Foundation board member. All proceeds go to the foundation which supports the 19 library branches in Prince George’s County.
In addition to the flying saucer T-shirt, you can also buy old Hyattsville library bricks from the demolition, many of which were repurposed to build the new library at 6530 Adelphi Rd., slated to open later this summer.
The flying saucer T-shirt is now available for pre-order for July delivery, just in time for the new library opening. Only youth sizes are currently available to pre-order because PGCMLS was trying to gauge the demand initially. Shelley O’Brien, the library system’s director of development and donor engagement, told the Hyattsville Wire that adult sizes will be available in early July in both black short-sleeve and long-sleeve and that flying saucer magnets will also be going on sale soon.
The iconic Space Age-era saucer was the subject of an intense public lobbying campaign to spare it from the wrecking ball as the old Hyattsville library was demolished.
Under the newly constructed library, the saucer’s new home is near the reading garden and landscaped courtyard towards the Toledo Road side of the property.
Work on the new Hyattsville public library was slated to be completed by this spring, but that was pushed back until July. Now it is expected to be completed by late August or early September, though that date is subject to change.
