Professional New York City dancer and Prince George’s County native Zuri Foreman has opened a new dance school near the Route 1 corridor aimed at diversifying the industry and reaching out to underserved youth.

The Foreman Arts School, which opened its doors last month and is located at 7800 Central Avenue near Hyattsville in an unincorporated part of Prince George’s County, will award full scholarships for summer dance classes aimed at bringing more low-income families and more diversity into the arts.

“I’m on a mission to colorize the arts,” said founder Foreman, who has worked as a professional dancer, singer and actress in New York City. “I’m tired of being one of the few black people on stage. It’s time for a change, and it starts with our children.”

The school will offer classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, modern and contemporary dance, creative movement and parent-and-child dance for young kids. Meanwhile, it is holding an ongoing fundraiser on GoFundMe to provide full scholarships.

A Prince George’s County native, Foreman has a certificate in dance theatre from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and is a principal dancer in the feature film “Passing,” available on Netflix. She has previously taught at the Brooklyn Dance Centers.
