A new spinoff eatery from the popular Taqueria Habanero will open on Friday, Aug. 6.
Called Cocineros, the Spanish word for chef, the “modern Latin eatery” at 3513 East-West Highway in Hyattsville in the parking lot of the Giant grocery store will feature a wide range of South and Central American dishes.
The restaurant opening was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to building material shortages and a slower-than-usual permit process, owner Carlos Alvarado told the Hyattsville Wire.
“Opening a restaurant during a pandemic was one of the toughest things to do,” he said. “You could no longer do the county’s permitting process in person, which made it harder since the online system isn’t too user-friendly.”
He described the menu as a combination of recipes from his childhood and favorites from various places in the Americas, including countries like Chile, El Salvador, Venezuela and Honduras, as well as some things he picked up in Maryland.
Cocineros will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Delivery and pick-up options will be available.
Taqueria Habanero has regularly received praise for its Mexican food, especially at its College Park location, including a Bib Gourmand award from Michelin and best Latin American restaurant in the Hyattsville Wire 2020 readers poll.
