One of the oldest continuously-running taquerias on the Route 1 corridor, Taqueria Tres Reyes still gets attention for its authentic Mexican food.
Located in an unassuming building at 5403 Kenilworth Ave. since the early 2000s, the restaurant is friendly toward those familiar with only the basics of Mexican cuisine. And the inside features an impressive mural by D.C.’s Conejo Tatts.
A large menu posted on the wall features Spanish and English names for each dish along with full-color photos and a number, in case you’re shaky on how to pronounce, say, huarche de carne, the popular sandal-shaped fried dough dish from Mexico City.
The plate-sized quesadillas, tacos and shrimp and tripe soups, along with its breakfast items such as chile relennos have all gotten notice in the past.
Named for owner Elsa Reyes, Taqueria Tres Reyes is one of 10 eateries being highlighted as part of a self-guided restaurant tour in Riverdale Park.
Other participating restaurants include 2Fifty Texas BBQ, Banana Blossom Bistro, Riviera Tapas and Queensway Restaurant. As part of the Taste of Greater Riverdale, customers at Taqueria Tres Reyes who post a photo on social media with the hashtag #tasteofGR by Sept. 18 will be entered to win a $200 Target gift card. Winner will be announced on Sept. 18 at the Thrives Day Community Event at Tanglewood Park in Riverdale.
You can also find Taqueria Tres Reyes on Uber Eats, Seamless and GrubHub, although be cautioned that there is an unrelated restaurant with the same name in Manassas, Va.
