Metro Considers Extending Blue or Silver Lines Along the Route 1 Corridor

Transit officials are considering several options for long-range plans that include extending the Blue or Silver Lines along the Route 1 corridor.

A study published last week by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority after two years of study included six options to address future growth in riders.

One plan would add a second Blue Line that connected to Union Station then headed north to new stops at Union Market, Ivy City, Fort Lincoln, Bladensburg and Hyattsville’s Arts District before connecting to the existing College Park and Greenbelt Metro stations.

That plan would cost from $15 to $20 billion and expand ridership by 92,000 weekday trips, generating $79 million in annual revenue.

Another plan would extend the Silver Line along a similar path to Greenbelt, while a third plan would extend the Silver Line but veer east after Bladensburg to end at New Carrolton instead.

The proposals are still in very early stages, with Metro planning to look more closely at the cost-effectiveness of various options before settling on its final plan by next year. Even then, it could take up to 20 years for the extensions to be built.
