These ‘Celestial Orbs’ Will Join Hyattsville Library’s Flying Saucer

Some other extraterrestrial objects will soon join the iconic flying saucer at the new Hyattsville public library, located at 6530 Adelphi Rd., and slated to open before the end of the year.

Mount Rainier artist Valerie Theberge has crafted a dozen round sculptures covered in different-colored mosaic tiles that will be be scattered around the historic saucer, which was preserved from the original library.

The mosaic-tile sculptures, which she calls “celestial orbs,” are designed to complement a 25-foot mosaic tiled and color-stained concrete floor area around the saucer.

“I wanted a 3-D presence on the spot that would dialogue with the existing flying saucer,” Theberge told the Hyattsville Wire.

The orbs are round with flattened tops so that they can double as seating, with the saucer providing protection from the sun and rain for some.

Theberge, who has previously made art for Melrose Skate Park, the courtyard at Artisan 4100 and the oven at Pizzeria Paradiso, was selected earlier this year to make exterior art for the library by an advisory group that included the Hyattsville Wire.

Meanwhile,  Curtis Woody, an Upper Marlboro artist who works in mixed media, was chosen to create a mural at the entrance inside.
