A D.C.-based nonprofit which serves as a full-service bike shop, sells refurbished bikes, and teaches bicycle mechanics to both youths and adults, is now open at 1811 Rhode Island Ave., in the Woodridge neighborhood of D.C.
Gearin’ Up Bicycles sells refurbished bikes ranging from $150 to $600, and customers can take any bike for a test ride. The shop also sells new and used parts and accessories, and accepts bicycles and bike parts as donations. It costs $65 for a basic tune-up and $95 for an advanced.
Over the summer, it moved from its longtime home in Eckington to its new 3,300-square-foot location right down the street from Zeke’s Coffee.
In addition to servicing bikes and selling used ones, Gearin’ Up Bicycles also teaches underprivileged youth how to fix used bicycles and holds bike maintenance and safety clinics for children and adults.
“Although we take everyone, our mission is to provide reduced cost repairs to residents that can’t access traditional bike shop prices,” development director Lauren Shutler told the Hyattsville Wire.
Shutler said that Gearin’ Up receives funding from D.C. agencies, private grants and individual donations, including an online fundraiser to cover the costs of moving. They chose the new spot because it was spacious and more affordable than other locations in D.C.
“It was the best location we could find for the money,” she said.
Now in it’s tenth year of operation, the shop will hold a grand opening from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, including food trucks, face painting, a deejay and a ribbon-cutting at 2 p.m.
Gearin’ Up is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and you can make a donation to support Gearin’ Up’s moving costs online here. So far, the organization has raised $25,000 toward its $75,000 goal.
