Bagel Place of College Park Officially Closes Doors

The owners of Bagel Place of College Park said they have closed its doors after negotiations with their landlord fell through.

Started in 1983, the family-owned bagel shop struggled to stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, launching a GoFundMe fundraiser that raised $46,000 from the community.

In a letter to customers on Friday, owners Bobby and Debbie Karanovich said that they have ended negotiations over their lease after three years and shut down immediately.

“We are extremely sad that nothing more can be done, and we have tried,” they wrote, noting that they had looked into finding a new building owner, moving to another space or selling the shop to another buyer.

They said there is exactly one month left on the current lease, adding that support from the community might pressure the landlord to let them stay.

“This would be a very slim chance, but our last hope,” they wrote.

With the eatery closed, College Park still has Bagels ‘n Grinds inside the Hotel at the University of Maryland.

This is incredibly sad… and I am and VERY ANGRY !!! Bagel Place is a an area institution..serving the College Park, University park, Riverdale, and Hyattsville communities … including the University. The College and City should due more to help keep this business from closing. Shame on the those landlords !

Also who is the landlord….If we are going to pressure the landlord we should have the name

  4. Lisa Lorraine edwards says:

Why do people always want to blame the city and the government when private negotiations break down? I’m just curious.
