The new Hyattsville library at 6530 Adelphi Rd., is now slated to open in late January.

Originally scheduled to open last spring, the library has seen construction setbacks due to various issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The current delay is in large part due to the supply chain problem bedeviling a lot of industries right now, and the contractor working on the library has not received all of the materials they need to finish the construction, Michael Gannon, chief operating officer for support services for the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, recently told the Hyattsville Wire.

He said there has also been a delay in getting the final elevator and fire alarm inspection.

“Until that happens, we can’t get a stocking permit, so the staff can’t go in to shelve all the books,” he said. “All the furniture has been delivered, but the table tops were the wrong finish, so they have to be redone.”

Two finishing touches that have been completed: A history mural at the library entrance by artist Curtis Woody and bricks with the names of donors on them on a walkway.

Meanwhile, Mount Rainier artist Valerie Theberge is working to place round mosaic-titled celestial orbs around the iconic flying saucer which is situated in the courtyard facing Toledo Road. It will complement her 25-foot mosaic tiled and a color-stained concrete floor area around the saucer.
