A Hyattsville tattoo shop has made a big move into an upgraded location across the street from Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.
Located at 4331 Gallatin St., in the former location of Three Little Birds Sewing Co., Satchmoe Art has a much airier and more upscale interior than its previous spot upstairs in the same building.
Owner Erick Satchell II told the Hyattsville Wire that he’s already seen business improve.
“Even before the grand opening, when we had paper covering the windows during renovations, we were getting a decent amount of walk-in traffic,” he said. “Once the paper came down, more and more people started to notice.”
Named for Satchell’s high-school nickname, the Satchmoe Art tattoo shop initially opened in 2016. Outside of opening the shop, Satchell is a local artist who has decorated a traffic box on Route 1 and worked on murals with Green Owl Design the Fight the Blight initiative.
Satchell said the most popular tattoo at the shop is a combination of a clock, rose and dove, a symbol of everlasting love that staff jokingly calls the “DMV special.” The most unusual was a woman who had been in a bike accident who had the bicycle design tattooed around a large scar on her knee.
While some businesses have seen business drop off during the pandemic, Satchell said they’ve had a spike as people working from home have more time to come in, with some even working on laptops while getting tattooed. He’s also seen some clients use extra money from their stimulus checks.
“Best advice I can give to those looking to get a tattoo is to thoroughly research the artists in the area,” he said. “Get an idea of that artists’ style so you can get the best quality of work from them.”
