North Brentwood Studio Creates Traditional Clay Bottles for Sangfroid Gin

Sangfroid Distilling Co. in Hyattsville spends a lot of time recreating traditional Dutch methods of making gin, also known as genever.

So it only made sense that they would try to recreate the classic Dutch-style gin container too.

The artisanal distillery turned to North Brentwood studio Material Things to recreate the traditional earthenware bottles used to store Dutch-style gin.

Material Things co-owner Katie Aldworth handmade each clay bottle this summer and fall, which Sangfroid is using for genever aged in an apple-brandy barrel for extra flavor.

Originally developed in the 1500s, genever was made with juniper berries to mask the flavor of malt wine that was distilled using old-fashioned pot stills and sold in tall clay bottles well into the 20th century.

Co-owner of Sangfroid, Nate Groenendyk, first became interested in genever after hearing his grandparents talk about how the Dutch drink was superior to British gin.

The collaboration is the latest collaboration with another business on the Route 1 corridor for Sangfroid, which has also worked with Green Owl Design, Franklins Brewery, New Brooklyn Farms, and others.

About 70 bottles will be available for sale at Sangfroid’s tasting room at 5130 Baltimore Ave. after Thanksgiving, just as the holiday gift-giving season gets underway.
