Lights are being installed along the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail to help make the path more walkable at night and to allow for better visibility.
The town of Riverdale Park is installing lights from the Station at Riverdale Park to the historic town center and onto the border with Hyattsville.
Lights that can be quickly attached to existing Pepco power lines are being installed now and should be completed before the end of the year. Other lights may take longer.
“There will still be some dim spots near town center where we will be installing decorative poles,” Mayor Alan Thompson told the Hyattsville Wire. “There are some electrical issues there that must be worked out before we can install them.”
The town has worked with Pepco, the Station at Riverdale Park, the College Park-University Partnership, state lawmakers and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to complete the project.
Thompson said the ultimate goal is to have the entire trail through Riverdale Park well-lit, with measures taken to prevent light pollution as well.
