A new pop-up gallery in Hyattsville that kicked off this week is hosting an exhibition of works by deaf and hard-of-hearing artists.
Located in an unused space next to the Keller Williams real estate office at 4806 Rhode Island Ave., the temporary gallery features paintings, sculptures and mixed media that highlight different aspects of deaf culture.
In the painting “A Party of One” by Mary Rappazzo, a young girl with an assistive hearing device is shown sitting alone as people at a party chat happily, while Pamela Witcher’s “My Heart Is a Village” shows how deaf people form their own community.
Called “Traversing the Boundaries of the Natural and Synthetic Worlds,” the exhibition highlights works of art from the permanent collections of the RIT /NTID Dyer Arts Center and the Gallaudet University Archives, Dyer director Tabitha Jacques told the Hyattsville Wire.
The exhibition will be available for viewing from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 15, though it will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The exhibition was put on with support from the Menkiti Group and Streetcar 82 Brewing Co., which is located around the corner.
