Two Route 1 Eateries Make Tim Carman’s List of Best Casual Restaurants

Two restaurants on the Route 1 corridor made a Washington Post list of the best casual eateries of 2021.

In a roundup of the favorite casual spots he visited last year — including some meals that were “consumed in the comfort of my own car” — reviewer Tim Carman highlights Brentwood’s Little Miner Taco (No. 9) and Hyattsville’s Cocineros (No. 6).

Located inside the miXt Food Hall at 3809 Rhode Island Ave., Little Miner received praise for its “kitschy mash-ups” on Mexican birria.

“Little Miner has morphed into such a major concern that it now has its own production kitchen, which transforms brisket, chuck, flank, loin and other cuts of beef into a rich, ruby-colored guisado spiked with guajillo chiles, cloves and a discernible dash of juniper,” he wrote.

Located in a strip mall at 3513 East-West Highway in front of the Giant grocery store, Cocineros was highlighted for rethinking the “traditional hierarchy of a restaurant.”

“While the opening-day menu — an assortment of tacos, pupusas, empanadas, molotes and more — was created largely by the owners, future incarnations will feature contributions from anyone, as way to erase the militarylike hierarchy of the kitchen and recognize the skills honed on the line,” he wrote.
