A new acupuncture studio opened in the SoHy Arts Building in downtown Hyattsville last month.
Located on the second floor at 5132 Baltimore Ave., Artemis Alchemy offers acupuncture as well as two other forms of Chinese alternative medicine, moxibustion, which involves burning a small herb during acupuncture, and cupping, which uses the suction from a small glass cup to loosen muscles.
Owners Elizabeth Barth and Zoey Dietz met in a graduate program at the Maryland University of Integrative Health in Laurel, where they had to do a joint assignment to create a business plan.
They told the Hyattsville Wire that they chose Hyattsville because they wanted to be part of the “creative, diverse, and homegrown community” as well as the diversity of plants in local parks and natural areas.
“Being near nature was important to us because we plan to teach classes about plants, herbs, and seasonal medicine that is a part of the origins of acupuncture,” they said.
The two said that they see people for everything from burnout and anxiety to digestive issues, back pain and allergies. They said the biggest misconception people have is about the needles, which are only about as thick as a cat’s whiskers and not painful.
After opening on Feb. 22, Artemis Alchemy is planning to hold open houses on Monday, March 7; Thursday, March 10; and Saturday, March 12; from noon to 4 p.m. You can register for free here.
Visitors will be able to try one of their homemade flower essences, pick up a free ear seed treatment, and get a free personalized health assessment with acupressure prescription.
