A new studio space in Riverdale Park offers musicians a WeWork-like membership for places to practice as well as musical equipment to use.
Located at 5650 Rivertech Ct. in the Discovery District, The Shed, which opened in February, is available to members 24 hours a day through the use of a digital key on their smartphones.
Inside are four studios that can be used to rehearse, give music lessons, record audition tapes, hold photo shoots and livestream concerts.
Members can also borrow equipment like bass guitars, amps, keyboards and even concert percussion instruments like a glockenspiel.
Owner Jauvon Gilliam also runs Capital Percussion + Backline Rentals and is principal timpanist of the National Symphony Orchestra.
He said the idea for The Shed came when managers at Capital Percussion were looking for a warehouse space big enough to hold their growing inventory.
When the pandemic hit, the team began thinking about trying something a little different, and stumbled on the Discovery District location “during a 3 a.m. web-surfing session.”
Monthly memberships are priced to cost about as much as two four-hour sessions at standard studio rates, starting at $250 per month. Individual sessions can also be booked.
