Washington Post Food Critic Highlights Several Eateries on Route 1

In recent weeks, Washington Post food critic Tim Carman has highlighted several eateries on the Route 1 corridor, putting a spotlight on the area’s growing dining scene.

The Hyattsville resident has recently given a shout out to several local eateries including Spice Kitchen and Little Miner Taco in Brentwood, Ramona’s Pizza Garden in Hyattsville and Dumm’s Pizza and Subs in Riverdale Park.

He’s also shared some local favorites on his Instagram account, with recent photos of food from Hyattsville’s Sugar Vault Desserts and Ramona’s Pizza Garden.

In the past, Carman has also highlighted eateries such as Cocineros in Hyattsville, Northwest Chinese and Pupuseria La Familiar in College Park, and 2Fifty Texas Barbecue in Riverdale Park.

Carman came to the D.C. area after working in Kansas City and Houston, serving for five years as food critic and editor at the Washington City Paper before joining the Post in 2010, winning a prestigious James Beard Award the following year for food-related columns and commentary.

In an interview, Carman once said that he was inspired in his writing by journalist Eric Schlosser’s book “Fast Food Nation” and spends a lot of time thinking about problems with the U.S. food supply system.

He’ll be sitting down for another interview later this month. As part of the Route 1 Corridor Conversations series, Carman will talk about what it’s like being a food critic, how he chooses restaurants to review, what he looks for in the dining experience and his favorite restaurants of note along the Route 1 corridor.

The interview will be conducted over Zoom from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. If you want to watch, fill out this online form and you will be emailed a link prior to the event.
