Construction Begins This Month on Trolley Trail Link in Hyattsville

Construction will begin in June on a crucial missing link in Hyattsville between the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail and the Northwest Branch Trail on Baltimore Avenue.

The Maryland Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it will begin paving a 10-foot shared-use path and buffer along the northbound side of Route 1 in Hyattsville, from Armentrout Drive to Franklins.

The new lane will make it much safer for pedestrians and cyclists to get from the Northwest Branch Trail to the 3.8-mile trail that follows the former streetcar line north to College Park.

To make room for the trail, Route 1 will be reduced to a single lane on the northbound side from Armentrout drive to just south of Farragut Street.

The $6.4 million project will include pedestrian lighting and modifications to traffic signals, curb ramps and crosswalks to make the path more pedestrian-friendly and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Concrete General of Gaithersburg will begin construction this month, aiming to finish by fall of 2023.
