Three restaurants on the Route 1 corridor have been featured on the first season of WETA’s “Signature Dish” TV show this year.
The locally produced show features host Seth Tillman visiting dining hot spots around the greater D.C. area to learn about their one “must-have” menu item.
Three local restaurants have been highlighted in different episodes: Hyattsville’s Chez Dior, Riverdale Park’s 2Fifty Texas BBQ and, now, in an episode that aired Monday, Mount Rainier’s Pennyroyal Station.
• In an episode on “West African Cuisine,” Chez Dior chef and co-owner Binette Seck cooked yassa chicken, a Senegalese smothered chicken dish.
Co-owner Mamadou Fall said that when they opened the restaurant eight years ago, the closest Senegalese restaurant was in Baltimore.
• In an episode on “Cooking with Fire,” 2Fifty pitmaster Fernando González discuss their Wagyu beef brisket.
Co-owner Debby Portillo noted that the location at Dumm’s Corner was a butcher shop in the 1930s, and they preserved some of the meat hooks.
• In an episode on “Southern Comforts,” Pennyroyal Station chef and co-owner Jesse Miller shared his smoky brisket and bone marrow macaroni and cheese.
Co-owner Erin Edwards said the dish’s combination of old and new is reminiscent of Mount Rainier’s historic architecture and its current artistic community.
