Mount Rainier Adds Colorful New Mural Along Route 1

The newest piece of public art on Route 1 is a colorful new mural near the roundabout in Mount Rainier.

Located on the building at 3416 Rhode Island Ave. next to the bus stop, the new mural is by D.C. artist Shawn Mitchell Perkins.

The colorful mural depicts a man and a woman, a streetcar and other images evocative of the city’s history and architecture.

Perkins was chosen as part of the city’s Mural Arts Project, which came with a $10,000 award, and replaced a mural featuring three black-and-white cartoon figures painted on the wall in 2013.

After studying at Howard University, Perkins worked in graphic design before shifting to creating murals for schools, hotels and restaurants, including painting one for the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field.

His murals can be identified by a trademark “SP-The Plug” signature at the bottom.
