Hyattsville’s Artist & Craftsman Supply to Move This Fall
A popular art supply store in Hyattsville will be moving this fall.
Located at 4902 43rd Ave., just behind Streetcar 82 Brewing Co., Artist & Craftsman Supply is currently searching for a new location in a similar area.
The Maine-based chain, which is 100% employee-owned, already closed a location on Brentwood Road N.E. in D.C., so the new store will serve the greater D.C. area. The next closest location is in Baltimore.
The store opened in Hyattsville in 2016 because of the local arts community, though everyone from University of Maryland architecture students to harried parents stopped by.
The area around it has changed a lot in the last few years, with the addition of Streetcar 82 and Pizzeria Paradiso, and there are proposals to turn the land around the Hyattsville Justice Center into a mixed-use development.
But some of the more successful shops along the Route 1 corridor have a core group of customers who will travel to shop there, whether that’s art supplies, yarn or a large selection of toys.
I wish the article had mentioned that the landlord is raising the rent and ultimately pushing them out! Will the empty building be a tax write-off? There continue to be too many vacant and empty commercial buildings along the route 1 corridor.
Sorry to see them close but glad they are staying in the area! We need them here, but a larger store would be great!!

I’m glad they will be staying in the area. I hope they have a fab realtor that will find them an amazing space nearby.
I wonder if there is enough available retail space in the Artspace building in Mt Rainier.
The Artspace building is a great idea, though I think they’d have to connect multiple units. To equal the current floor area. I hope the parent company has the good sense to stay not just ‘In a similar location,” but right here in the Gateway Arts District, where there’s a greater concentration of professional artists and active studios than anywhere else in the DMV. And its full of amateurs, too, and we also need supplies.
They have announced they are closing but nothing about the move. Can you do a follow up on what’s happening with the move?
Why does the article not mention the biggest question on everybody’s mind: Why are they leaving? The owner of the building says their corporate headquarters refused to even meet to discuss possible terms of a future lease agreement. How can we get them to stay??
I am glad that they are coming to DC. Have a lot of artist supplies. Will be a very convenient location.
