Construction Underway at Ionia Apartments Along Route 1 in Woodridge
Construction is underway on an affordable housing development along Route 1 in Woodridge.
Located at 2911 Rhode Island Ave. NE, not far from the D.C.-Maryland border, Ionia Apartments will have 100 units available to families making less than 80% of the area’s median income — or less than $123,760 for a family of four.
Twenty-one of the apartments will be set aside for households earning less than 30% of the median income, or $46,410 for a family of four.
Residents of the building are estimated to save a total of $1 million in rent annually compared to typical rents.
The development is being built by the nonprofit Lincoln-Westmoreland Housing using grants and loans from the D.C. government and private sources.
It’s named for Dr. Ionia Rollin Whipper, an early African-American physician and graduate of Howard University School of Medicine who established one of the first maternity homes for women of color in D.C.
