The Remarkable History Behind This Unassuming Hyattsville Building
If you live in Hyattsville, you’ve driven past the little white building on Queensbury Road.
Located at 4118 Queensbury, just past a stop sign, the building has windows that are either covered or obscured, making it something of a mystery.
But for years, inside this former convenience store built in 1931 has been a collection of hundreds of pieces of art from renowned artist Athena Tacha.
A native of Greece, Tacha became renowned for artwork ranging from a series of small printed books to a two-acre sculptural landscape in Philadelphia.
In 1998, she became affiliated with the University of Maryland, and she and her husband, Richard E. Spear, bought the 1,745-square-foot building for her to use as a studio and storage for her art.
In an August profile in The New York Times, Spear said he intends to sell the building to commercial real estate agents as he tries to find homes for the various pieces of art, as Tacha is now suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
No sale has been finalized yet, according to real estate records.
