Mount Rainier’s New Street Mural Adds a Colorful Glow

A new street mural outside Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier adds a colorful “glow” to the area.

Named “Solstice Glow,” the mural of native flowers by the artists at Chalk Riot is based a temporary street mural made in June.

The Neighborhood Design Center, which helped get the art painted through it’s Made You Look! program called it a “a bold, geometric mural that doesn’t just brighten the street” but also “slows traffic, sparks pride, and reflects the energy of Mount Rainier.”

Research shows that this kind of “asphalt art” can lead to a 50 percent reduction in crashes involving pedestrians.

The project came about with the support of the Maryland State Arts Council, Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council, Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, GCS-Sigal, Joe’s Movement Emporium and the city of Mount Rainier.
