Artists Bring Vibrant Colors to Rhode Island Avenue in Brentwood

Route 1 artist Luther Wright recently painted five concrete planters in Brentwood, which can be seen on the western side of Route 1, across from miXt Food Hall, as part of a collaborative effort to beautify a part of Rhode Island Avenue.

The project, called “Brentwood in Bloom,” is a joint effort between the Town of Brentwood and Gateway Community Development Corp, with Brentwood Town Administrator Shelley Dorsey-Washington providing the funding. Chalk Riot also hired local artists to design and paint signature butterflies in eight different locations, including one next to the bus stop in front of miXt Food Hall.

Wright, known for his murals and for having studios in Brentwood and Hyattsville, painted cactus flowers and a miner’s pick against a blue sky for a spot near Little Miner Taco.

Other planters featured butterflies and Black-Eyed Susans, the Maryland state flower; an eagle; and two puppies and a bone near Brentwood Animal Hospital. The planters were provided by Ernest Maier and the plants were planted by Out The Trunk Studio. The new painted planters feature the highly saturated colors of 1960s poster art and the bold lines of mural art, making them easily visible from the road.

The Gateway Arts District Management Team Project Manager, Allie O’Neil, told the Wire that the town of Brentwood will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Nov. 24. The event will include a walking tour of the artwork and an opportunity to get to know the artists.
