All the Purple Line Trains Have Now Been Delivered

The Purple Line hit another milestone with the final delivery of a light-rail car.

The 142-foot long vehicles were built by Spain-based rail car manufacturer CAF, assembled in Elmira, N.Y., and then transported to Maryland on flat-bed trucks.

The first rail car was delivered in mid-2024, and the 28th and final one came in late November.

The Purple Line is now more than 85 percent complete and on track to open in 2027. In recent months, operators have been testing the rail cars at various intersections in Prince George’s County, while transit shelters are now complete.

The rail cars can travel a top speed of 55 mph and hold a maximum of 432 passengers.

The 16-mile light rail line, which will run through parts of Riverdale Park and College Park, has faced lawsuits, work delays, and cost overruns since construction started in 2017, but the project seems on track as it nears completion.
