Route 1’s César Chávez Elementary to Start Work on New ‘Outdoor School’
César Chávez Elementary will start work soon on a new “outdoor school.”
Located at 6609 Riggs Rd., the dual Spanish-English immersion school will carry out some of the loudest work on the project over winter break to avoid disruption.
The project will include outdoor learning classrooms to engage students in a nature-based curriculum, “calming down spaces” for students who need a break for mindfulness or meditation, a raised-bed garden, and new landscaping.
A winding path runs through the entire area.
EnviroCollab designed the project, which Live Green Landscape Associates is implementing. The Hyattsville Community Development Corp. is managing the project, with Allie O’Neill taking the lead.
Nature Sacred, which helped fund the project, said it was inspired in part by students and parents feeling disconnected from the physical school during the coronavirus pandemic.
Other funding for the project comes from a state grant, the César Chávez parent-teacher organization and parent fundraisers.

This is such an exciting development for our school. Outdoor learning and connecting to nature helps to ground kids and teachers, and it’s proven to improve test scores and self esteem. As a parent of Cesar Chavez students I can’t wait for them to experience the natural beauty of their school grounds with their peers!
