Neighborhood Design Center Opens Mount Rainier Office

An urban design group that has played a key role in dozens of projects on the Route 1 corridor recently opened an office in Mount Rainier.

Located at 4002 34th St., The Neighborhood Design Center is one of two offices for the nonprofit, which partners with local governments in Maryland on building parks, improving public spaces, and revitalizing downtowns.

The design center has been working in Prince George’s County since 1992. In recent years, it has helped add public art to Driskell Park, improve small business facades in Mount Rainier, come up with a new town seal for Cheverly, and build a segregation memorial in Brentwood, among other things.

Deputy Director Briony Hynson told the Hyattsville Wire that the nonprofit has shared space with the Gateway Community Development Corporation, worked out of an office building in Riverdale Park and since 2016 had been located in Pyramid Atlantic Art Center building in Hyattsville.

“When we began our most recent search, we were fortunate to come across the small storefront at 4002 34th St.,” she said. “We immediately felt at home. After chatting with Lisa from The Waterhole (the juice shop next door)—whose community spirit embodies so much of NDC’s approach—we had a sense that this was our place.”

The Neighborhood Design Center will hold a regional conference next April at Joe’s Movement Emporium designed to spark and share ideas about how to improve the area.
