Art Classes for Kids Begin This Winter at the Loft in Hyattsville

Children’s art classes for the winter will start soon at The Loft in Hyattsville.

Located at 4214 Gallatin St., across from the Masonic Lodge, the children’s art studio offers classes for kids ages two through 12 and day-off camps for elementary students.

Owner Lia Salza told the Hyattsville Wire that when she decided to expand from Takoma Park, the Arts District seemed like an obvious choice because it’s so walkable and is accessible to D.C. neighborhoods it draws from such as Brookland.

“We liked the idea of opening in a place that clearly values small businesses and the arts,” she said.

Classes range from Art Exploration for kids ages 2-4 who attend with parents or caregivers to weekly drop-off art classes and full-day school-day-off camps for kids ages 5-11. There are also some workshops for adults.

“All of our classes focus in some way on the visual arts, and we introduce kids to a wide variety of materials and techniques,” Salza said. “We incorporate fiber arts (sewing, stitching and weaving) into many of our programs, and this has become a core part of what we offer.”

The Loft is located inside a former dairy store and the design inside includes nods to that history, with milk crates to store toys, a steel milk can as an umbrella holder and a “spilled milk” pattern in the bathroom tile.
