Historic Sis’s Tavern in North Brentwood Now Available for Private Rentals

The historic Sis’s Tavern music hall in North Brentwood, once frequented by the likes of Duke Ellington, is now available for private event bookings, including banquets.

Located at 4516 41st Ave., the 1912-era building has been carefully restored with state and federal grants, supported by the town of North Brentwood and the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation and is now available to rent for weddings, graduation parties, birthday celebrations, and corporate or team-building events, accommodating up to 70 guests.

The rental fee is $150 per hour, and an outdoor covered pavilion with lawn space is also available for $100 per hour.

The building initially operated as a grocery store and later housed, at various times, a barbershop and a juke joint starting in the 1950s, where jazz stars like Ellington and Pearl Bailey would stop after more formal performances in downtown areas, such as the Howard Theatre.

The space is named after Marie “Sis” Walls, who ran the tavern as a late-night hub for Black performers from the 1950s through 1970. It was later known as ‘Baby Dee’s’ after Deloris R. Spriggs, which was in operation until it closed in 1996.

The hall is also notable as the first commercial building in the town, which was founded during the Reconstruction era by African-American veterans of the Union Army. North Brentwood became the first incorporated African American town in Prince George’s County in 1924.
