The Purple Line Is Now More Than 87% Complete

The Purple Line is now more than 87 percent complete.

The 16-mile light rail line, which will run through parts of Riverdale Park and College Park, is coming closer completion after nearly a decade of lawsuits and work delays.

According to the Maryland Transit Administration, all tracks in Prince George’s County are now in place, which means most of the upcoming road closures and traffic delays are in Montgomery County.

The final and 28th light rail car was also recently delivered ahead of schedule. Most of the sidewalks along the route are now finished as well.

A photo essay in the Washington Post in December noted that “in some Riverdale Parking lots, late at night, Marylanders can now catch a glimpse” of a moving Purple Line train. Testing is happening between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., starting in New Carrollton and reaching College Park in November.

The light rail line is currently scheduled to open in January of 2028.
