Hyattsville’s Newest Record Shop Taps Into the National Vinyl Craze

A new record shop in Hyattsville is following a national trend toward vinyl.

Located at 4344 Farragut St., just down the street from Wills Decorating and Vigilante Coffee, Fireplace Records specializes in vinyl from a wide range of genres, including rock, jazz, and hip-hop, to gospel and reggae.

The four owners previously sold vinyl at farmers’ markets and at a periodic vinyl collectors’ event in D.C. called the Crate Convention before teaming up to open the shop in November.

The owners of Fireplace Record have stated that their shop is open to everyone, whether you’re a vinyl collector, a producer, or a “sample stalker.”

The store opened as vinyl is experiencing a renaissance, surpassing CDs to become the most popular physical music format, according to data from the Recording Industry Association of America.

It’s not just nostalgia, either. More than half of vinyl buyers are under the age of 35, who say they appreciate the tactile experience of holding an album, the sound quality and the fact that it leads to more intentional listening, as it’s harder to skip a song than on streaming services.

Fireplace Records is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. It joins nearby Shady Lane Records, formerly Red Onion Records, on Gallatin Street.
