New Affordable Housing Development Slated for College Park
A new development aimed at providing affordable housing for senior and physically disabled residents is planned for College Park.
Located at 4810 Branchville Rd., just off University Boulevard on the way to Greenbelt, Branchville Crossing will feature 87 apartments in a four-story building on 2.2 acres of currently vacant land.
The apartments would be restricted to people 62 and older, and have rents pegged at 60% of the area’s median income.
Like most affordable housing projects, construction is being funded in part by a federal affordable housing tax credit. The development will be built by Boston-based Cruz Development Corp.
“From the City’s perspective, this project addresses a long-standing priority: creating permanently affordable, accessible housing for residents who are often most vulnerable to rising housing costs, while ensuring the development fits responsibly into its surrounding area,” College Park Mayor Fazlul Kabir wrote on his blog.
The city is also offering to match any money spent on a piece of public art on the site with a grant of up to $15,000.
