A Baltimore News Outlet Expands Coverage to Route 1
A growing Baltimore news outlet will soon expand its coverage to areas along the Route 1 corridor.
Earlier this month, the nonprofit Baltimore Banner announced it will expand its coverage to Prince George’s County this spring, following a successful expansion in Montgomery County.
“Starting this spring, we’ll be putting reporters on the ground in this vital part of the state, focusing on local news in and around key towns including Bowie, Laurel, Greenbelt, and College Park,” CEO Bob Cohn wrote in an email to staff.
Cohn noted that, despite having nearly a million residents, the county is “woefully underserved by local news sources,” a point underscored by the recent layoffs at the Washington Post.
Over the next few weeks, the Banner will staff up with a “small corps of reporters and editors” who will cover local government, business, education and food, among other topics.
Launched in 2022 by the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, the Banner has quickly expanded to more than 80 reporters and more than 55,000 subscribers, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2025 for its coverage of fentanyl overdoses.

They also recently announced that they’ll be expanding their sports coverage to include the DC sports teams and are making hires to support this change. This comes on the heels of the Post eliminating its Sports page.
