Purple Line Trains Are Now Regularly Testing at Night

Purple Line trains are now doing regular test runs at night in College Park.

The 16-mile light rail line, which runs through parts of Riverdale Park and College Park, is running fully electrified trains from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Intersections are closed during a test run as police or other staffers flag traffic through manually.

The testing route runs from the University of Maryland station, across Route 1, and along Campus Drive to the Adelphi Road station, according to Purple Line NOW.

Route 1 residents are advised to keep an eye out for oncoming trains and treat every track as an active rail line, including overhead lines that may be carrying electricity.

The testing is beginning in Prince George’s County because all track has been laid here now. The rail line is still expected to open in late 2027.
