Primark will open at the Mall at Prince George’s on Thursday, May 14.

The Dublin-based clothing and home goods retailer is taking over the former location of J.C. Penney’s, which closed in 2020 amid a nationwide restructuring during Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Hyattsville store is its second in Maryland and will be one of three in the greater D.C. area once it opens an upcoming store in Arlington.

“Primark and the DMV just make sense,” said Primark US President Kevin Tulip. “We’ve seen the demand for quality fashion that doesn’t break the bank at our stores in Maryland and Virginia, and we’re thrilled to reach more area shoppers than ever before with our opening in Hyattsville this May.”

While well-known in Europe, Primark is still making a name in the U.S.. While other stores have struggled due to online competition, Primark has focused on heavily promoting in-store shopping, with a minimal online shopping option.

The opening will kick off at 11 a.m. with a ribbon cutting, music from a D.J. and giveaways for the first customers. Primark is advertising women’s denim for $12, men’s T-shirts for $5 and kids’ sweatshirts for $8 and merchandise for the Washington Commanders and the Baltimore Ravens.

The Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, which has owned the Hyattsville mall since 1998, at one point contemplated tearing down the J.C. Penney building and building a 360-unit apartment building with first-floor retail on the site.
